Build deeper relationships through private conversations. SoapBox messaging lets you connect one-on-one or in group chats with your church family.

Starting a Conversation

Message Someone New

Find the Person

Search for them in the member directory or tap their profile from a post.

Start Message

Tap the Message button on their profile.

Write Your Message

Type your message and tap send.

From Member Directory

  1. Go to Community > Members
  2. Search or browse for the person
  3. Tap their name
  4. Select Send Message

From a Post or Comment

  1. Tap the person’s name or profile picture
  2. On their profile, tap Message

Messaging Features

Text Messages

Send text messages with:
  • Full formatting
  • Emojis
  • Line breaks

Media Sharing

Share rich content:
  • Photos from camera or gallery
  • Videos (up to 2 minutes)
  • Voice messages
  • Documents and files

Scripture Sharing

Share Bible verses:
  1. Tap the Bible icon in the message composer
  2. Search for a verse
  3. Select and send
The verse appears as a formatted card the recipient can tap to read more.

Prayer Requests

Send prayer requests directly:
  1. Tap the prayer icon
  2. Write your request
  3. Send privately to a trusted friend

Group Chats

Creating a Group Chat

Start New Chat

From Messages, tap New Chat > Group Chat.

Add Members

Search and select people to include.

Name Your Group

Give the chat a name (e.g., “Bible Study Friends”).

Add Photo (Optional)

Upload a group photo for easy identification.

Create

Tap Create Group to start chatting.

Managing Group Chats

Add Members:
  1. Open the group chat
  2. Tap the group name at top
  3. Select Add Members
  4. Search and add people
Remove Members:
  1. Open group settings
  2. Tap the member’s name
  3. Select Remove from Group
Leave a Group:
  1. Open group settings
  2. Tap Leave Group
  3. Confirm
Small groups automatically have a group chat created. You don’t need to set one up manually.

Message Management

Read Receipts

See when messages are read:
  • Sent - Message delivered to server
  • Delivered - Message reached their device
  • Read - They’ve seen the message

Deleting Messages

Remove messages you’ve sent:
  1. Long-press the message
  2. Select Delete
  3. Choose Delete for Everyone or Delete for Me
“Delete for Everyone” only works within 1 hour of sending and may still be seen if they already read it.

Editing Messages

Fix mistakes:
  1. Long-press your message
  2. Select Edit
  3. Make changes
  4. Save
Edited messages show “Edited” indicator.

Notifications

Message Alerts

Get notified of new messages:
  • Push notifications
  • In-app badges
  • Sound alerts

Customizing Notifications

Per-Conversation Settings:
  1. Open the conversation
  2. Tap the name at top
  3. Select notification preference:
    • All messages
    • Mentions only
    • Muted
Global Settings:
  1. Go to Settings > Notifications
  2. Find Messages section
  3. Adjust preferences

Do Not Disturb

Silence all message notifications:
  1. Go to Settings > Notifications
  2. Enable Do Not Disturb
  3. Set schedule if desired

Privacy & Safety

Who Can Message You

Control who reaches out:
  • Anyone - All church members
  • Followers - Only people you follow
  • Connections - Only mutual connections
Set this in Settings > Privacy > Messaging.

Blocking Users

If someone is bothering you:
  1. Open the conversation
  2. Tap their name
  3. Select Block User
  4. Confirm
Blocked users:
  • Cannot message you
  • Cannot see your posts
  • Don’t know they’re blocked

Reporting Conversations

Report inappropriate messages:
  1. Long-press the problematic message
  2. Select Report
  3. Choose a reason
  4. Submit
Reports go to church moderators.

Search Messages

Finding Old Conversations

Search your message history:
  1. Go to Messages
  2. Tap the search icon
  3. Enter keywords, names, or dates
  4. View results

Within a Conversation

Search within a specific chat:
  1. Open the conversation
  2. Tap the name at top
  3. Select Search in Conversation
  4. Enter search terms

Message Tips

Try to reply within 24 hours to maintain connection.
Sometimes a voice message conveys tone better than text.
Consider if your message could be misunderstood. Add clarity or emojis as needed.
For pastoral issues or crises, suggest connecting in person or by phone.
If someone is slow to respond, they may be busy. Don’t spam follow-ups.
